Blue Monday Blues

Every Monday night is Blue Monday Blues at West Minster Presbyterian Church. This five-year running program brings the community of Southwest  D.C together to celebrate the rich culture of  blues music. Myself being a huge fan of blues music particularly  Lead Belly, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt and BB King was elated to find that these type of events happen and none the less in Churches. This neighborhood in South West  is  among one of the first major urban renewal projects after the WWII when the Federal Government created the department of Federal Housing and Development. One of the first neighborhoods settled in DC, South West was filled with alley dwellings and sanitation issues that lasted until the 1950s. Regardless of all this it  was full of  meeting spot, bars and night clubs which in return created a sense of identity and participation in the community. The onset of urban renewal restored the physical infrastructure but destroyed the culture that was so richly woven into the area. Fifteen year residents,  Reverend  Brian Hamilton and his wife are among the many looking to rebuild the culture and identity through the arts. Blue Monday Blues is every Monday at six and Jazz every Friday. Only Five bucks guys! So check it out.
